Our Strength Lies in Our Humanity

Environment & Energy

The overwhelming consensus amongst scientists is that climate change and global warming is caused by humans; that it’s having a damaging affect on weather patters, accelerating extinction of wildlife, negatively impacting on agriculture, water supply, sea level, air quality. If we don’t radically change our diets, our fuel supply, the way capitalism recklessly plunders the world’s dwindling resources, we will enter a period of global food shortages, mass migration and conflict.

Coal mines can be closed without destroying livelihoods – here’s how

Coal mines can be closed without destroying livelihoods – here’s how Countries across the globe are trying to wind down coal production. While this will help in the battle against climate change, those communities that have specialised in coal mining may see their local job market decline or be eliminated entirely. Most of these places have mined coal for many generations. Given long-standing traditions, such communities will inevitably resist decarbonisation…

Curious Kids: why is the sea salty?

Curious Kids: why is the sea salty? Grant Elliott/Unsplash., FAL Why is the sea salty? – Torben, aged nine, Sussex, UK. Two-thirds of the Earth’s surface is covered in water, and 97% of that is salty seawater. Only 3% of our planet’s water is fresh, and 2% is trapped, frozen in ice caps, glaciers and soils. That leaves less than 1% as fresh, liquid water in rivers, lakes and streams…

London Rebellion: Day 2

After Monday’s exhilaration, today we’ve been pushing down roots and getting used to life in the capital. As we found in April, there comes a point at which it seems almost natural that we would be here in the roads. Natural, but also nicer: instead of car engines, choirs and samba bands; instead of throngs of busy strangers, free food and open dialogue (not least from incorrigible truth-teller Jonathan Pie!)…

XR Unchained: Day 2 of Rebellion

XR is more Unchained than ever. The sheer scope of creative, ingenious and courageous actions all over the globe is no longer something we can even attempt to keep up with. But rather than leaving so much unrecorded, we thought we’d give you our readers the chance to succeed where we can’t: so below, you’ll find a messy, beautiful, and quite possibly overwhelming scrapbook of everything that’s come to our attention in the past 24 hours. We can’t guarantee the dates or other details which you might find – we don’t have time to check it all! What we can guarantee is that this compilation is the most comprehensive perspective going of the boundless, borderless phenomenon that our movement has become. Good luck! Rebel Daily 2: The Rebellion Takes Root

(Sign up to the international newsletter here) The seeds have been sewn. Compassion; awareness; courage. They landed in cities, suburbs and farmland; in hearts and in minds, taking no account of age or occupation or background. And now we’re growing: taking root.  In some cities we’re established on the roads and growing stronger by the day. Tents are assembled, flags are dangled, kitchens put together. In other places we’re meeting, painting, blocking: making our mark in other ways. Rebel campers make it through the first night of Rebellion. But the deeper growth is not a thing which can be touched. It comes in the form of newly-made communities coming together to dance, sing, laugh and cry. In creativity, diligence and generosity combining into miraculous works of art. In love. And…

Legal Briefing: Learn About Arrest

Extinction Rebellion’s Legal Team has produced this guide to being arrested, from how to prepare for arrest to what the consequences might be if you are. As well as the handy graphic, you’ll also find links to tons of useful resources. As a mutually supporting network we are all responsible for ourselves, and while we support each other as best we can, your actions are your own. It’s important to prepare yourself for all eventualities before attending an action (it isn’t possible to predict whether you will be arrested or not). Remember, this document is an overview intended to bring things to your attention, and is to be seen as a gateway to further reading. Links are listed at the bottom of each section. Legal Strategy The legal strategy documents…

BBC, we talked about this: so why are you still letting vested interests undermine peaceful movements?

In July, Extinction Rebellion met with the BBC to discuss its approach to reporting on the crisis and how it can lead the way with an appropriate and urgent response. We presented our 8-point plan to better face the Planetary Emergency, which includes a commitment by the BBC “to only allow think tank spokespersons on-air to discuss the climate emergency whose funding is fully transparent.” Despite feeling encouraged by the initial response by Tony Hall, Director General of the BBC, we were disheartened this week to see the BBC’s flagship radio programme Today has once again platformed the disgraced former Metropolitan Police Commander Richard Walton on the first day of our International Rebellion.  This is the very same man that authored the propaganda report on Extinction Rebellion by the opaquely-funded…

Unions can – and will – play a leading role in tackling the climate crisis

Unions can – and will – play a leading role in tackling the climate crisis Worradirek/Shutterstock How did a billionaire win over coal miners in Pennsylvania and West Virginia to become president? Three words: “Trump digs coal”. By linking deindustrialisation and the decline of working communities in America’s “rust belt” to environmental regulation, Donald Trump could paint his greener rivals as out of touch with the concerns of ordinary Americans. Never mind that climate change and pollution will hit working class people hardest – when it’s “jobs or the planet”, the former will always be a more immediate worry for the precarious and impoverished. It needn’t be that way though. The campaign for One Million Climate Jobs, organised by the Campaign against Climate Change Trade Union Group, has put workers…
