COVID vaccine weekly: AstraZeneca is safe and effective, but facing supply issues

The European Medicines Agency has said that the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine is safe and effective, and not associated with an increased overall risk of developing blood clots. The regulator conducted a review of the vaccine after a small number of people developed blood clots in Europe after receiving the vaccine. Thirteen countries suspended the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine in response. In the UK, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency also stated the evidence does not suggest that blood clots in veins were caused by the AstraZeneca vaccine. Both agencies strongly emphasised that the benefits of being vaccinated far outweighed…

EFF Members: We Want to Hear From You!

For the first time, the Electronic Frontier Foundation is reaching out to its vast community to improve its membership program and outreach. Today current EFF members and other donors from the past year will receive an email inviting them to tell us how to better serve our supporters. Public support has powered EFF’s initiatives to defend digital privacy, security, and free expression for decades, so it’s fitting that EFF members will help shape our future. As a staunch privacy advocate, EFF intentionally minimizes the amount of information that we collect about donors. Our standard is considered fundraising blasphemy, but we…

Israel/ OPT: Court date set to hear Amnesty petition to lift punitive travel ban on staff member

The Jerusalem District Court has set a date for a hearing on 6 April 2021 in response to Amnesty International’s submission of a new petition to overturn a punitive travel ban imposed on one of its campaigners by the Israeli authorities, the organization said today.  Laith Abu Zeyad, Amnesty International’s Campaigner on Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), has been barred from accessing Amnesty International’s office in occupied East Jerusalem or from travelling abroad by the Israeli authorities since October 2019 for undisclosed “security reasons”. This is the second time in a less than a year that the Jerusalem District…

U.K. knowingly sourcing gloves from Malaysian company accused of modern slavery

The Independent reports that U.K. frontline workers in at least one South England public hospital have been given medical gloves made by the Malaysian company Brightway Holdings, accused of subjecting its workers to conditions of modern slavery. The company is currently under investigation by the Malaysian department of labor and is facing 30 charges and a fine for failure to comply with local housing standards for workers. Seeing photographs from a raid of the firm’s worker accommodation, the Malaysian Minister of Human Resources, S. Saravanan, is reported to have said, “This looks like modern slavery.” Migrant workers, largely from Bangladesh…

Energy storage technology is accelerating – but grids aren’t ready for the transition

Energy storage technology is accelerating – but grids aren’t ready for the transition Thanks in part to the pandemic-induced economic slowdown and the collapse of coal and triumph of wind power over the last decade, a new analysis suggests the UK is halfway to meeting its net zero greenhouse gas emissions target. The ultimate goal of a fully renewable grid will depend on technology that can store clean electricity from wind farms for hours and days. Since I began writing about energy storage in 2013, falling costs have prompted a surge in batteries being installed around the world. Just as…

Day and night aren’t equal length on an equinox – here’s why

Sunset. Shutterstock/Delcroix Romain Winter in the northern hemisphere and summer in the southern hemisphere are both coming to an end. That means the days and nights are becoming roughly equal in length, and the path the Sun traces across the sky is changing. On a winter day, the Sun is low in the sky, whereas on a summer’s day the Sun lies considerably higher. But on a specific day in the spring or autumn, the Sun will be visible directly above the equator, somewhere in the middle of the two arcs traced by the Sun in the summer and winter.…

COVID-19: how to tackle vaccine hesitancy among BAME groups

Some of the highest rates of death and serious illness during the pandemic have been among Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities. According to government data, Black ethnic groups have the highest diagnosis rates of COVID-19 and people of Bangladeshi ethnicity have twice the risk of death compared to those of white British ethnicity. Other ethnic groups (Chinese, Indian, Pakistani, other Asian, Caribbean and other Black) had 10%-50% higher risk of death compared to white British people. Vaccination provides the most effective form of protection against COVID-19. But vaccine hesitancy is higher among some BAME groups than people from…
