Child Hunger Has Skyrocketed Since Manchin, GOP Killed Expanded Child Tax Credit

A new analysis out Friday confirms that the number of U.S. households with kids that report not having enough food to eat has surged in the months since corporate Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia joined Senate Republicans in refusing to extend the expanded Child Tax Credit benefit beyond mid-December. Data from the Household Pulse Survey (HPS), a nationally representative internet survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, shows that from April 27 to May 9, 15% of households with children reported food insufficiency — defined as sometimes or often not having enough food to eat in the past…

Progressives Are Urging Schumer to Restart Push for Climate and Social Spending

Progressive groups are asking Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to restart negotiations on the budget reconciliation package that contains the bulk of President Joe Biden’s social and climate agenda, which passed the House under the banner of “Build Back Better” before stalling in the Senate last year. Refusals by Sen. Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia) and other centrists to support the legislation prevented the Senate’s razor-thin Democratic majority from reaching a 50-member consensus necessary for passage. The bill would have needed to pass through the special “budget reconciliation” process in order to dodge Republican obstruction in the evenly divided Senate. Social…

New Poll Shows Democrats Barely Ahead of Republicans in 2022 Midterms

A new poll demonstrates that previous projections of the 2022 midterm elections may have been premature in concluding that Republicans will likely win control of Congress later this year. A USA Today/Suffolk University poll, conducted from December 27-30, asked respondents who they preferred to win in November’s federal elections. Thirty-seven percent of respondents said they wanted Republicans to be in control of Congress next year, while 39 percent said they preferred that Democrats retain control. That 2-point margin is a 10-point swing from what that same poll found in November of last year, when Republicans led Democrats by 8 points…

Young Voters Say They Disapprove of Biden’s Performance by Nearly 2-to-1 Margin

President Joe Biden’s approval ratings have undergone a significant drop since the start of his tenure, especially when it comes to young voters. An Economist/YouGov poll published this week found that Biden has an overall approval rating of 41 percent, with 50 percent of Americans disapproving of his job performance as president. Among voters between the ages of 18 and 29, however, there’s an even wider gap — 50 percent within that age bracket also disapprove of Biden’s job performance, but only 27 percent say they currently approve. While a few other age groups surveyed in the poll have a…
