2021 Had Lowest-Ever Supplemental Poverty Rate, Thanks to Stimulus Provisions

Poverty rates hit a record low by some measures in 2021, the Census Bureau found in a new report released Tuesday, thanks in large part to the direct aid provided in stimulus bills passed by Congress over the first year of the pandemic. The Census Bureau found that the poverty rate hit an all-time low of 7.8 percent last year, while the child poverty rate fell to an all-time low of 4.5 percent, according to the Supplemental Poverty Measure. The Supplemental Poverty Measure takes a more holistic view of poverty, taking into account aid provided by public programs like Social…

Ocasio-Cortez Says Manchin Has Lost All Credibility on Climate

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) had harsh words for right-wing Sen. Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia) on Tuesday after the coal-funded multimillionaire announced last week that he would oppose congressional action on climate, likely locking U.S. greenhouse gas emissions for at least the next few years, if not decades. “Manchin has paused all action for the United States to act on climate for the last four years, so I don’t think he has any authority to speak on climate for the rest of our term here,” Ocasio-Cortez told The Independent. She also said that President Joe Biden should declare an emergency…

Coal Baron Manchin Kills What Could Be Nation’s Last Best Chance on Climate

In a tyrannical move that will have lasting consequences for everyone alive and their progeny, conservative coal baron Sen. Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia) told Democratic leaders on Thursday that he will not support a reconciliation package that contains provisions to mitigate the climate crisis. This is a major blow to the Democrats — as well as to the planet’s dying species and anyone invested in inhabiting a livable planet — who were hoping to get about $300 billion or more in funding for climate and energy spending aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions with tax incentives for clean energy and…

Progressive Jamie McLeod-Skinner Triumphs Over Big Pharma Ally Kurt Schrader

Progressive candidate Jamie McLeod-Skinner has won the Democratic primary in Oregon’s fifth district, ousting conservative Democrat Rep. Kurt Schrader, who worked with fellow conservatives in the party to undermine Democrats’ agenda last year. With over 80 percent of votes counted, numerous outlets, including The Associated Press, have called the race for McLeod-Skinner, making her the Democratic House candidate in the blue-leaning district that includes southern Portland suburbs and Salem. With about 57 percent of the vote, the progressive won by a nearly 15-point margin over Schrader, who she’s previously dubbed as the “[Sen.] Joe Manchin of the House.” “Our battle…

Jamie McLeod-Skinner Is on the Verge of Ousting Blue Dog Kurt Schrader in Oregon

Blue Dog conservative Democrat Rep. Kurt Schrader appears to be on the verge of losing his primary in Oregon to progressive challenger Jamie McLeod-Skinner after spending much of the last year voting to block much of his party’s agenda. With about 77 percent of votes counted in Oregon’s fifth district, McLeod-Skinner has 59.3 percent of the votes, according to tallies available at the time of this reporting. Schrader is trailing behind by nearly 19 points, with 40.7 percent. The race was called for McLeod-Skinner by Cook Political’s House editor Dave Wasserman on Twitter on Tuesday morning, but has yet to…

Research Finds Investment in Permanent Child Tax Credit Would Pay Off 10-Fold

New research finds that if the expanded child tax credit were made permanent, the social and economic benefits from the investment would far outweigh the costs of the program. A working paper from Columbia University, Barnard College and Open Sky Policy Institute researchers finds that if low-income families with one child saw their income increase by $1,000 a year, the benefits would outweigh the cost of the program 10-fold. While making the program permanent would cost the government $97 billion, it would create social benefits worth $982 billion. These benefits include direct impacts, like improved health and longevity for both…

Manchin Reportedly Backing Corporate-Friendly Michelle Childs for Supreme Court

As President Joe Biden considers several top Supreme Court picks, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia) is reportedly telling colleagues in private that he prefers a GOP-backed candidate, who unions and pro-labor advocates have sounded the alarm about for her history of advocating for corporations against workers, Punchbowl News has reported. According to Punchbowl, multiple anonymous sources have said that Manchin wants J. Michelle Childs in the Supreme Court because she has bipartisan support, despite the fact that Supreme Court nominees only need 51 votes to pass. The lawmaker also cites her public school education as a plus. Childs does indeed…

Police Arrest Rep. Jamaal Bowman During Voting Rights Protest at the Capitol

Capitol Police arrested progressive lawmaker Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-New York) after he joined a demonstration for voting rights at the Capitol on Thursday, according to his office. “Today, Congressman Jamaal Bowman joined a voting rights non-violent direct action at the North Barricade of the U.S. Capitol Building and was arrested by the U.S. Capitol Police,” said Marcus Frias, Bowman’s director of communications. “We will provide more information and updates as we gather them.” According to police, protestors had begun to block one side of a barricade. The department claims it has arrested over two dozen people in relation to the…

Manchin Suggests He Was Never Planning to Support Reconciliation Bill Proposals

After announcing his opposition to Democrats’ Build Back Better Act, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia) explained in an interview on Monday that he never planned on compromising with fellow Democrats to support crucial portions of the bill – and that he preferred instead to essentially axe the bill altogether. On West Virginia MetroNews’s “Talkline with Hoppy Kercheval,” Manchin said that he has “been way far apart philosophically” from fellow Democrats who pushed to lower the price of prescription drugs and provide financial assistance to families via the expanded child tax credit and other potentially transformative proposals. Though he claims to…
