Post “Roe,” Advocates Fear for the Future of Contraceptive Self-Determination

Jacora Johnson, a 22-year-old Texas resident, is facing a difficult and potentially painful decision. They currently use the Depo-Provera shot, a type of birth control that’s administered by a medical provider every three months. In addition to being a highly effective form of contraception, it’s also gender-affirming for Johnson, who is nonbinary. “I don’t get my menstrual cycle, which is great because that can be dysphoric for me,” they said. A three-judge panel on the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld a ruling that was issued by a lower court last year, blocking a statewide ban of gender-affirming care in Arkansas. The ruling means that an injunction on the law will remain in place and that transgender children in the state can continue to receive gender-affirming care from their doctors. Such care generally includes therapy and, in some cases, the use of safe, reversible medication like puberty blockers — the prescription of which the state had attempted to criminalize. The law also banned the use of certain medications…

The bill would also make it illegal to give trans children surgeries that would permanently change their sex organs — despite the fact that such surgeries are typically only…

Last week, Gov. Greg Abbott (R-Texas) issued an order directing the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) to “conduct prompt and thorough investigations of any reported instances of Texas children being subjected to abusive gender-transitioning procedures.” The order came days after Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) filed a legal opinion which incorrectly claimed that gender-affirming “procedures and treatments…when performed on children, can legally constitute…
