Trump Sues House January 6 Panel to Avoid Testifying

Less than a month after he expressed eagerness to provide testimony on live television, former President Donald Trump sued the House January 6 panel to block a subpoena ordering him to testify. In a lawsuit filed Friday night in the Southern District of Florida, Trump’s legal team argues that while ex-presidents have voluntarily agreed to cooperate with congressional subpoenas in the past, “no president or former president has ever been compelled to do so.” “Long-held precedent and practice maintain that separation of powers prohibits Congress from compelling a president to testify before it,” Trump attorney David Warrington said in a…

Survey: Hundreds of County Sheriffs Think Their Authority Supersedes Federal Law

A newly released survey finds that hundreds of county sheriffs believe their power as law enforcement overseers supersedes state and federal laws in an alarming show of right-wing radicalization of law enforcement across the U.S. In a survey of over 500 sheriffs conducted by The Marshall Project and political scientists Emily Farris and Mirya Holman, nearly half of respondents, or over 200 sheriffs, agreed with the statement that “The sheriff’s authority supersedes the federal or state government in my county.” Even more sheriffs, about 71 percent, agreed with the statement that they are willing to interject when they do not…

Oath Keepers Were Emboldened by Trump Tweet, New January 6 Audio Shows

The House committee investigating the January 6 attack released an audio recording Thursday in which members of the far-right Oath Keepers militia react in real-time to one of former President Donald Trump’s tweets as his supporters stormed and ransacked the U.S. Capitol. The new audio makes clear the militia members were emboldened by Trump’s response to the attack, which urged rioters to “please support our Capitol Police, they are on our side.” Communicating via a walkie-talkie app, Oath Keepers who were inside the Capitol and in other locations responded positively to Trump’s message, with one noting that “he didn’t say…

Report: Oath Keepers Include Hundreds of Lawmakers, Police Officers & Military

A new report reveals that hundreds of current lawmakers, law enforcement personnel and people serving in the U.S. military are listed as members of the far right extremist group the Oath Keepers, which was instrumental in the attack on the U.S. Capitol building on January 6, 2021. The report is based on a leak of the Oath Keepers’s membership rolls, which was published last year by the nonprofit journalist collective Distributed Denial of Secrets. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) Center on Extremism delved into the names in the leak and published findings on the professions of many of those included. The…

The House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol building has asked Mark Bankston, a lawyer representing parents of victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting, to hand over text messages and other phone data from right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. On Thursday, Bankston revealed that the committee has contacted him regarding the messages, which he had received during the defamation trial that was brought against Jones by the parents of Sandy Hook victims. The committee has not yet announced the request for the data. Jones was found guilty of defaming the parents of…

Report: Jan. 6 Committee Finds Connections Between Militias & Rally Organizers

The House select committee investigating the violent breach of the U.S. Capitol building on January 6, 2021, has reportedly uncovered evidence that shows that there was coordination between two white supremacist militias during that event — and that those militias may have also coordinated with organizers of the “Stop the Steal” rally that proceeded the attack on Congress. That connection could have implications for former President Donald Trump, whose inner circle was also in regular contact with event organizers, using untraceable burner phones to have conversations in the days leading up to the January 6 rally. Hugo Lowell, a congressional…

Oath Keepers Founder Arrested on January 6 Sedition Charge

Stewart Rhodes, the leader and founder of the extremist far right militia the Oath Keepers, was arrested on Thursday for his role in planning the January 6 attack on the Capitol. He is the first person to be charged with seditious conspiracy in relation to the attack. Rhodes, an army veteran and former lawyer, founded the extremist militia in 2009. The group specializes in recruiting veterans, soldiers and active police officers.
