A majority of New York state residents say that Republican Rep. George Santos should resign from Congress just a few weeks after he was sworn in, due to his many lies on the campaign trail in 2022. Santos has lied about so many issues that some media outlets, including HuffPost, have created running tallies of all the statements he made while campaigning for the House that were later revealed to… Source Source / Read More: Poll Finds Most New Yorkers Want George Santos to Resign From House Seat

A new poll shows that a plurality of Americans would support making Washington, D.C. the 51st U.S. state if its residents voted in favor of the measure. An Economist/YouGov poll published earlier this week asked respondents whether they would back D.C. statehood if it was supported by the district’s residents. A plurality (41 percent) said they would support the idea, while just over a third (36… Source Source / Read More: Poll: Plurality of Americans Would Support DC Statehood If Backed by Residents

Trump Brags Mar-a-Lago Search Improved His Polling — It Didn’t

Former President Donald Trump claimed on Thursday that the search warrant executed on his Mar-a-Lago estate last month has helped his polling numbers, a statement that is demonstrably false. In the immediate aftermath of the FBI search to retrieve documents that Trump improperly removed from the White House, the former president’s numbers did improve among Republican respondents in some polls. But among the electorate overall, Trump’s numbers have not improved as a result of the investigation. Still, Trump claimed in a radio interview on Thursday that he has been faring better in the polls since the search warrant was executed.…

New Poll Says Democrats Lead GOP by 7 Points in Generic Congressional Ballot

New polling from Monmouth University shows that Democrats are faring better in general than Republicans when it comes to who Americans believe should control Congress. The poll, conducted between July 28 to August 1, asked respondents who they preferred to be in charge of the legislative branch. Democrats attained decisive support from 38 percent of respondents, with another 12 percent saying they leaned toward Democrats. Republicans, meanwhile, received 34 percent support, with an additional 9 percent saying they leaned toward them. Overall, when general support for either party was combined with respondents who leaned each way, 50 percent of Americans…

Dems Favored to Win the Senate Due to “Weak” GOP Choices, FiveThirtyEight Says

For the first time this election cycle, FiveThirtyEight says that Democrats have a better shot of retaining control of the Senate than Republicans have of winning control of the chamber. The site, known for predicting election outcomes, noted that the change has come in part due to Republicans selecting “weak candidates” in some of the key races for this fall’s midterm contests. FiveThirtyEight’s election model uses polling data and other statistics to simulate the election 40,000 times in order to get a snapshot of who will win. Ultimately, Democrats won the Senate in 52 out of every 100 outcomes simulated…

Poll Finds Approval of Supreme Court Down 22 Points Over Past Year

A new poll shows that Americans are overwhelmingly dissatisfied with how the Supreme Court currently functions, with a large swath of respondents changing their views on the institution over the past year. The Marquette Law School poll, conducted on July 5-12, found that most Americans do not approve of how the Supreme Court has functioned over the past year. Just 38 percent of respondents said that they approve of the Court’s recent actions, while 61 percent said that they disapprove. That approval rating is a drastic shift from the American public’s opinion on the Court a year ago. Indeed, in…

Poll: Nearly 6 in 10 Americans Want Marijuana Legalized

A new poll demonstrates that a majority of Americans believe that marijuana should be fully legalized, while only a small portion of the country thinks that the drug should remain illegal on the federal level. Recreational use of cannabis is currently legal in 19 states. However, many states still have laws banning the drug’s use, and the federal government still lists cannabis as a Schedule I drug, in spite of President Joe Biden’s campaign promise to remove it from that list. Recreational cannabis was a $15 billion industry last year in the states where it was legal, showcasing that it…

Poll Shows Warnock Leading Walker, Abrams Tied With Kemp, in Georgia Races

A Quinnipiac University poll published on Wednesday suggests that Democratic candidates running for Senate and governor in Georgia are faring much better than they were just a few months ago — and are on possible paths to victory come November. The poll asked voters which candidates they’d prefer to vote for if the election were being held today. In the governor’s race, Democratic challenger Stacey Abrams tied with Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, in a rematch of their 2018 gubernatorial race in which Abrams narrowly (and controversially) lost. Both candidates received 48 percent support from respondents in the poll. When it…

Petition Calling for Impeachment of Clarence Thomas Nears 500,000 Signatures

A petition calling for the resignation or impeachment of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is nearing half a million signatures after he refused to recuse himself from a case that was a clear conflict of interest due to his wife’s right-wing activism. Ginni Thomas, a frequent advocate for far right causes, texted former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows at least 29 times after the 2020 presidential election, urging him to seek means to overturn the results. When a case involving Meadows’s documents and communications while in the White House made its way to the Supreme Court, eight of the…

Poll: SCOTUS Anti-Abortion Ruling Could Motivate Strong Dem Turnout in Midterms

New polling taken directly after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned abortion rights that were recognized in Roe v. Wade finds that voters are more likely to back candidates in this year’s midterms who support reestablishing abortion rights through federal legislation. According to an NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll conducted over the weekend, 56 percent of Americans do not support the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, in which the conservative majority ruled to undo the abortion protections established in Roe. Fifty-five percent of respondents said that they think of themselves as mostly supporting abortion rights, while only 36…
