We explore the multifaceted implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) companions, both their potential benefits and significant drawbacks. We highlight how the human brain is wired to anthropomorphise AI, leading users to form effective emotional connections with chatbots, even for counselling or romantic purposes. There are however, critical ethical concerns, particularly regarding the intrinsic value of human-AI relationships, the risk of social deskilling, and the potential for dependency or the nurturing of negative behaviours. Ultimately,t the overall impact of AI companions will depend heavily on their development and practical application.
